Backend Engineer (Legal AI Platform)

About Us
At Datica, we are building an AI-powered LegalTech platform that uses Large Language Models (LLMs), AI Agents, and Retrieval-Augmented Generation (RAG) to transform legal research, document analysis, drafting, and other legal workflows.
Our platform helps individuals, lawyers, and businesses understand legal information, work with legal documents, and complete complex legal tasks more efficiently.
We are looking for a hands-on Backend Engineer to help build reliable, scalable backend systems and integrate AI capabilities into our product.
You will work closely with frontend engineers, AI engineers, and the Technical Lead to take Datica from MVP to a secure, production-ready platform.
Responsibilities

• Develop and maintain REST APIs using FastAPI.
• Build scalable backend services and application workflows.
• Design and optimize PostgreSQL database schemas and queries.
• Implement authentication, authorization, and role-based access control.
• Integrate LLMs, AI agents, and other AI services into backend workflows.
• Build asynchronous processes, background jobs, caching, and file-processing workflows.
• Write clean, maintainable, documented, and well-tested code.
• Troubleshoot bugs, performance issues, and production incidents.
• Collaborate with frontend and AI engineers on product features and system integrations.
• Participate in code reviews and contribute to backend engineering standards.

Requirements

• At least 4 years of professional Python development experience.
• Strong hands-on experience with FastAPI.
• Strong knowledge of PostgreSQL and relational database design.
• Familiarity with SQLAlchemy or a similar ORM.
• Familiarity with RAG systems, AI agents, and document-processing pipelines.
• Experience designing and consuming REST APIs.
• Experience with Docker, Git, and collaborative development workflows.
• Familiarity with Redis, caching, and background workers.
• Understanding of authentication, authorization, testing, and application security.
• Strong debugging and problem-solving skills.
• Ability to work independently and take ownership in a fast-moving startup environment.
• Good communication and collaboration skills.

Nice to Have

• Experience with Celery and RabbitMQ.
• Familiarity with Elasticsearch or other search systems.
• Experience with microservices or event-driven architecture.
• Experience integrating LLM APIs such as OpenAI, Anthropic, or Gemini.
• Experience with CI/CD and production monitoring.
• Experience building SaaS, LegalTech, FinTech, or document-heavy products.
• Practical experience using AI-assisted development tools while maintaining code quality and security.
