About the Role

We're looking for a Backend Developer to join our engineering team and help build and scale the systems behind our platform. You'll work on high-traffic, data-intensive services where clean architecture, performance, and reliability matter — not just shipping features, but shipping them the right way.

Responsibilities

• Design, develop, and maintain backend services and APIs using PHP 8.3+ and Laravel 11.x, at scale
• Turn information needs into working software — gathering context from stakeholders, understanding data flows and existing processes, and digging into problem areas before jumping to a solution
• Assess the operational feasibility of proposed solutions by weighing requirements, constraints, and trade-offs, and follow the solution through the full development lifecycle
• Weigh competing demands — performance, cost, and delivery timeline — when deciding how a feature or system should be scoped and built
• Translate business and product requirements into well-architected technical solutions, applying DDD and SOLID principles
• Build and evolve domain models using established patterns (Repository, DTO, Strategy) to keep the codebase maintainable as it scales
• Design efficient database schemas and queries in PostgreSQL, with attention to indexing and performance at scale
• Build and optimize search functionality using Elasticsearch (Scout + Elastic Scout Driver)
• Write and maintain automated tests (PHPUnit & Pest) covering CRUD operations and critical business logic
• Participate in code reviews, sprint planning, and Agile ceremonies; collaborate closely with product, QA, and other engineers
• Work within a Git-Flow branching model and Jira-based workflow, from ticket to merge request to deployment
• Maintain and improve CI/CD pipelines (GitLab CI/CD) and containerized environments (Docker / Docker Compose)
• Use AI-assisted tools thoughtfully to accelerate code generation, debugging, refactoring, and test writing — without compromising code quality or correctness
• Back up your work with clear documentation — flowcharts, diagrams, code comments, and technical write-ups — so decisions and architecture are legible to the next engineer, not just to you

Qualifications:

• Solid, hands-on industry experience with PHP and Laravel — 5+ years, with meaningful depth specifically in Laravel (Laravel 11.x specifically preferred)
• Strong understanding of software design principles — SOLID, and practical experience applying DDD
• Working knowledge of Repository, DTO, and Strategy patterns in real projects
• Proficiency with PostgreSQL, including query optimization and indexing strategy
• Experience writing unit and integration tests (PHPUnit), with a clear sense of what's worth testing and why
• Comfortable with Docker-based development workflows and Git-based collaboration (branching, merge requests, code review)
• Familiarity with Elasticsearch or similar search technologies
• Solid grasp of databases and caching layers, and the trade-offs between them
• Comfortable working in a Linux environment
• Familiarity with software documentation practices (flowcharts, diagrams, technical write-ups), not just inline code comments
• Practical experience using AI coding tools as part of your day-to-day workflow
• Strong attention to detail and a proactive, "find the problem before it finds you" mindset
• Excellent communication skills and comfort working closely with a team
• Strong ownership — takes full responsibility for features end-to-end, from implementation through testing to deployment, without needing to be chased
• Team collaboration — communicates clearly, gives and receives feedback well, and participates constructively in code reviews
• Automation-first mindset — looks to eliminate repetitive manual work rather than tolerate it
• Critical thinking — proactively identifies problems and proposes solutions rather than waiting to be told what to fix

Nice to Have

• Familiarity with NoSQL / in-memory data stores (e.g. Redis)
• Exposure to cloud-native infrastructure and deployment patterns
• Experience in a health tech or regulated-data environment
• Bachelor's degree in Computer Science or a related field (a higher degree is a plus, not a requirement)
• Experience with RabbitMQ or other message brokers for async processing and service-to-service communication
